It Just Feels Like Something

July 25, 2025

This post is all about my fine art and creative portrait work—where I lean into intuition, mood, and conceptual ideas. I also shoot other types of photography with different approaches, but this is the style I’m most passionate about sharing here.

What Even Is Conceptual Photography? (Here’s How I Do It)

People sometimes ask me how I come up with my photo ideas—like there’s a big story or message behind every image.

The truth is... there usually isn’t.

I’m not sitting around crafting stories.

I’m not scripting scenes.

Most of the time, there’s no storyline. There’s no clear message.

There’s just something that feels like it wants to exist.

My process isn’t narrative—it's instinctive.

I don’t start with a plot or a big idea. It might be color combo, a weird object, a prop, flowers, etc. --that just feels like it belongs somewhere, even if I don’t yet know where.

I might find an article of clothing while thrifting or something unexpected online or at a market. Really, it’s just a visual pairing that pops into my head, and I want to see it come to life.

Often it starts with a single element, and then things fall into place mid-shoot. It’s not necessarily planned but it’s not exactly random either. I’ll see something and think, this with that? That could be interesting.

Occasionally, I create the objects myself. Once it was an eyepatch that i just felt needed tacks on it. Then i decide the clothing around that. Mid session, i decided it needed flowers too. I have a lot of props that i set out before the shoot that give me an idea for a pairing and we see what works as we go along.

Ive created crowns, spray painted clothing, and crafted other random ideas.

That’s really the center of how I work.

Something poetic, something moody, something strange or beautiful or unexplainable.

Not a plot. Just a vibe.

I follow texture, contrast, instinct. I follow what feels visually strange, beautiful, or poetic—even if I can’t explain it in words. I love mixing opposites—masculine with feminine, soft with edgy, grounded with regal. Flowers show up a lot too. They soften and elevate everything.

So no, I’m not a storyteller in the classic sense.

Conceptual photography doesn’t have to mean building a whole backstory.

It can just as easily be about:

  • Mood through color
  • Vibe through objects or stuff i diy
  • Pairings that feel intuitively right but hard to explain
  • Visual metaphors you might not fully decode—but that still move you

That’s what I’m doing.

I’m not documenting—I’m creating.

Even when I don’t have words for it, I know when it feels like something.

I also love hearing what you see in an image. Your interpretation is part of the art.

If you're working with me...

You don’t need to come in with a full concept—but if you do, I’ve got you.

I’m fully capable of creating based on your vision. If you’ve got a specific idea, theme, or mood in mind, I’ll ask questions, do my research, and craft something thoughtful and aligned with what you’re hoping for. I take your ideas seriously—and I love bringing someone else’s creative spark to life in my own way.

That said, you also don’t have to have it all figured out. Some of my favorite sessions start with someone saying:

“I trust your eye—let’s make something cool.”

We’ll chat about what you’re drawn to—your favorite images of mine, colors, textures, or just a general vibe—and build from there. I’ve got a deep collection of clothing, props, florals, and details to work with, and I love pulling it all together in unexpected ways.

The experience? Chill. Very go-with-the-flow. Not super formal or stiff. Just intuitive, creative, and fun.

You don’t have to come in knowing exactly what you want. You just have to come in open.
